It’s Ok if You Are Not Yourself Today
Hypocrisy is the rule, not the exception.
We all do things not because we want to, but because they are vehicles for something else. And I’m telling you, resisting this truth is a sheer waste of time.
- Take it as it is: A raw, unfiltered human trait.
- Use it as you should: To better understand people’s thoughts.
You see, politicians are the best (and most extreme) example of the hypocrisy of human nature. They exist solely through the image they convey to the public.
They are the first influencers. The first to direct millions or even billions of people’s eyeballs to one single spot to convey a message. The first to leverage that massive attention into power.
Politicians can’t openly share their dirty little secrets for fear of shattering their carefully crafted image
Because guess what?
What reaction will arise in public opinion upon discovering the truth?
The truth that they dine at the finest restaurants. Stay at the most luxurious places. And lead lives of debauchery.
Citizens want to feel understood by the people who are supposed to manage them. In a way, they want to feel close to them. Like friends.
So the goal of politicians is to act as friends who understand their constituents’ concerns and can assist them in their daily lives. Much like a close acquaintance would. But behind the curtains, they’re not different than you and me.
They do have flaws. And they sometimes do need to promote ideas they don’t fully believe to maintain their public façade.
See where I’m going with this?
We’re All Politicians in a Small Way
We may not be watched by millions, but certainly by dozens. Family, friends, and colleagues are three social circles where we need to maintain a public image.
It’s impossible to “BE YOURSELF” in all these. You can strive to be as authentic as possible, but you can’t always speak your mind with brutal honesty if you want to maintain peace.
You Will Need to Make Concessions
Sometimes, you’ll need to feign satisfaction for everyone’s benefit (including your own). Everyone does this.
So two things to remember:
- Don’t feel ashamed of hypocrisy. Life is too short to fight every battle.
- Don’t trust what people say. Trust what they do.
