The great paradox is this:

You have low self-esteem, yet you believe everyone is focused on you.

You lack the courage to do many things because you believe you’re so important that everyone is watching and judging you. Yet paradoxically, you don’t even see yourself as worthy of care.

See the irony?

But deep down you know the truth.

Nobody cares. Just like you don’t pay much attention to what others are doing around you, they don’t pay attention to you either.

Why It’s Always Embarrassing to Ask Where the Toilets Are

I have many self-centered friends.

They assume others will see and interpret their words and actions exactly as they themselves would. But in most cases, they won’t.

And even on those rare occasions when people do notice, they interpret it entirely differently than we would.

Like you, I always feel embarrassed asking where the restroom is at a restaurant or a friend’s house.

I feel terribly judged, out of place, and I want that feeling to end. There’s a sense that I’m intruding on…
